The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (SPBS) in the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale anticipates having a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in either Applied Psychology or Brain and Cognitive Sciences to begin August 16, 2023, on a 9-month appointment. The position is contingent on available funding.

The workload for this position is typically two courses per semester, service on MA and PhD student committees, and an active and successful research program.

Duties include teaching that is primarily at the undergraduate level and includes Introductory Psychology, Careers in Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics which are required for psychology majors.  At the graduate level, courses would be determined by the candidate’s background.  

A PhD in Psychology completed before August 16, 2023, is required. If all requirements for the PhD have not been completed by August 15, 2023, a one-year term appointment at the rank of Assistant Lecturer may be offered at a reduced rate of pay in accordance with University policy (https://policies.siu.edu/personnel-policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.php). Candidates should have a record of relevant teaching experience and of scholarly productivity with strong potential for extramural funded research.

In Applied Psychology, areas of research include health/medical psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, social psychology, community psychology, and related areas.  Applicants must have demonstrated ability to conduct research in applied settings and extend basic psychological theory and research to applied problems. 

In Brain and Cognitive Sciences, areas of research include behavioral pharmacology/toxicology, developmental psychology (including those specialized in aging), and related areas.  

For the Applied Position, the ability to teach one or more of the following courses is preferred: Social Psychology, Health Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Measurement; Brain and Cognitive Sciences Position: Behavioral Toxicology, Psychopharmacology, Theories of Learning, Computational Modeling, Brain and Emotion, and Adulthood and Aging.

For the Brain and Cognitive Sciences position, applicants with a research and teaching program that makes explicit connections between brain and psychological processes, including research with animal and human subjects, will be preferred.  

There are opportunities to collaborate with colleagues specializing in the areas of behavior analysis, behavioral economics, behavioral ecology, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, learning and memory, social cognitive development, recovery of function, evolutionary psychology, among others.

The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (https://psychology.siu.edu) has doctoral programs in clinical psychology, applied psychology, behavior analysis and therapy, and brain and cognitive sciences. The clinical program is accredited by APA and the behavior analysis and therapy program is accredited by ABAi. We currently have 14 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, 80+ doctoral students, almost 300 undergraduate majors. Our research programs encompass departmental, campus, community, and national/international collaborations. We have effective working relationships with SIU’s School of Medicine, area hospitals, numerous clinics and psychological-service agencies, and other multidisciplinary groups in the region. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is classified as a doctoral “research university: high research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation. The Southern Illinois region is a beautiful area with a low cost of living, temperate climate, excellent schools, and surrounded by lakes, forests, and wineries. We are within a 1-2-hour radius of Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee.
