The individual in this position is the chief university official responsible for planning, developing, coordinating and implementing study abroad programs for the university, including incoming and outgoing semester and year exchanges, faculty-led travel study programs, study abroad grants and scholarships, related advertisement services and international opportunities programming. This activity supports the broader university goal of enhancing the global competence of our students and faculty as recommended by university, state and national task forces on improving the quality of education. Study Abroad Programs is one of three divisions of the Center for International Education. The other two units are International Students and Scholars and International Development, each led by an Associate Director. All three divisions are led by the Executive Director of International Affairs.

• Initiates and Manages Overseas Programs – Works with Deans, Chairs, Directors, faculty and external organizations to develop overseas programs including study abroad programs. Responsible for overall management of programs including budgeting, faculty recruitment and selection, program promotion and recruitment, student selection and orientation, student financial aid management, re-entry programming, program evaluation and logistical services such as housing, registration and insurance.

• Provides Leadership and Direct the Overseas Programs Staff and Affiliated Faculty – Daily contact, weekly meetings and direct guidance.

• Initiates and Manages Exchange Programs – Manages the International Student Exchange Program, the Utrecht Network Exchange and other student exchanges administered through Study Abroad Programs. Serves as liaison with departments offering student exchanges and support the development of new ones. SIUC exchanges currently involve 171 institutions in 44 countries.

• Coordinates International Scholarship Programs – Coordinate all aspects of the Fulbright, British Marshall and National Security Education programs. Also, publicize and advise students about other international grant opportunities in cooperation with University Honors.

• Serves as SIUC’s International Representative – Maintains international contacts to ensure the university is represented in international organizations.

• Coordinates Protocol and Schedules of Visiting International Delegations – Serves as host.

• Supervises International Opportunities Advising – Oversees student advisors, interns and volunteers who advise on study, work and travel abroad opportunities. Oversees the collection and organization of resource collection about these topics including financial aid resources in order to provide educational services to students

• Master’s Degree in International Relations, Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field • Minimum (3) years’ experience in International Opportunities related programming 
• Strong international skills including evidence of sensitivity to and acceptance of people from diverse cultures 
• Experience studying, working or living abroad  

• Experience using Terra Dotta or comparable study abroad management software

• Experience with computers to include a thorough familiarity with MS Office, Internet and email usage

• Strong  professional communication skills, leadership, and diplomacy

• Experience presenting at Forums on Education Abroad and NAFSA workshops

• Experience representing Study Abroad at campus events such as open houses, orientations, scholarship interviews and other events to include evenings and weekends

• Experience conducting/directing Study Abroad fairs and events
